AFFIRMATION

This is a need many people are just plain bad at fulfilling for others. Some people wear frames that say that a pay cheque should suffice in terms of affirmation. Maybe you go out of your way to acknowledge truly exceptional things, but certainly not the routine stuff that people get paid to do. That’s a prevalent frame, which means there are many people walking around in organisations thirsty for any recognition that they, and their work, are having some impact.

There is huge play between trust and affirmation. If you trust someone, it’s okay to affirm them without that being perceived as a weakness on your part. If you don’t trust someone, you are less likely to affirm them because that renders you vulnerable. People who have a hard time thanking others are often seen as insecure and self-centred. Authentic connections often start with taking the time to tell someone how much their work has made a difference to the way you now approach an issue.
